Asphalt Shingle Roof Installation in Bridgewater, NJ

Manufacturer-spec installation of the asphalt shingle system itself: starter course, nailing pattern, ridge caps, and balanced ventilation.

OVERVIEW

The shingles themselves are only as good as the starter course, nailing pattern, and ventilation installed with them.

THE PROCESS

Every course installed to manufacturer spec.

The shingle system is installed in a specific sequence so the finished roof qualifies for full manufacturer coverage.

  1. 01

    Starter course & underlayment

Starter shingles go down at the eave over the underlayment so the first field course has a proper seal against wind-driven rain.

  2. 02

    Field shingles, spec nailing pattern

Each course is fastened with the manufacturer-specified nail count and placement, keeping exposure consistent across the roof.

  3. 03

    Balance intake & exhaust ventilation

Ridge and soffit ventilation are sized together so the attic exhausts properly instead of trapping heat and moisture.

  4. 04

    Ridge cap & final inspection

Hip and ridge cap shingles finish the system, followed by a full inspection against manufacturer installation requirements.

Asphalt shingle installation: SGM's specific material specialty

SGM Home Restoration (NJ HIC #13VH13723900) installs several roofing materials, including slate, tile, wood shingle, copper, metal, and rubber roofing. This page covers one of those specialties in depth: the asphalt shingle system itself. If you already know a new roof is going on an addition or new build and have not settled on shingles specifically, our broader roof installation page covers new construction roofing in general. If you are here because you have decided on architectural asphalt shingles, this is the page that gets into exactly how that system goes on and why the installation details matter as much as the shingle you pick.

We are a certified installer for both GAF and Owens Corning shingle systems, which matters for a reason beyond the product itself: those manufacturer warranties are conditioned on the system being installed to spec, not just on using their shingles. A shingle installed with the wrong nailing pattern or an unbalanced attic can void that coverage even if the shingle itself never fails.

Starter course, nailing pattern, and exposure

A shingle roof starts at the eave, not the ridge. The starter course goes down first, adhesive strip facing out, so the first row of field shingles has something to seal against and wind cannot get under the tabs. From there, every course depends on consistent exposure, the amount of each shingle left visible, to keep the roof watertight and looking uniform from the ground.

The nailing pattern matters just as much as the shingle itself. Each manufacturer specifies exact nail placement and count for its wind rating, and nails set too high, too low, or at an angle instead of flush reduce holding power even though the roof looks identical from the street. We install to the manufacturer's specified pattern on every course, not a faster shortcut, because that pattern is what the wind-resistance warranty is actually built on.

Ridge cap installation and ventilation balance

The ridge is where the two roof planes meet, and it takes more wear than almost any other section. Ridge cap shingles have to be installed over a properly cut and vented ridge slot, not just laid over solid decking, so the attic actually exhausts the air the soffit vents bring in. Intake and exhaust have to be balanced: too little intake and the exhaust vents cannot draw properly, too little exhaust and heat and moisture build up in the attic regardless of how well the shingles below are installed.

Getting that balance wrong does not usually show up as a leak right away. It shows up years later as premature shingle aging from trapped heat, or as ice damming in winter from an attic that is warmer than it should be. We size and balance ventilation to the specific roof, not a one-size-fits-all ridge vent, and finish with hip and ridge cap shingles installed to the same manufacturer spec as the field.

Why homeowners choose SGM for shingle system installation

You get a crew certified on both GAF and Owens Corning systems, installing to the manufacturer's nailing pattern, exposure, and ventilation spec so your warranty stays valid, not just a shingle color chosen off a sample board. For the full roof-replacement side of that decision, including tear-off and decking, see our roofing overview. Contact us today for a free estimate on your shingle system installation.

Have used SGM Home Restoration & Roofing on many occasions. They were my roofer on two apartment complexes in Flemington and also replaced my roof on my own home. Silverio is wonderful to work with. They are thorough in both their work and clean up. Also their prices were more than 50% lower than the highest bid I received for my home. Would highly recommend getting a bid from this company on your next home repair/improvement.

We had a great experience with Silverio from SGM Roofing. He installed a completely new roof on our home in Bridgewater, and we couldn’t be happier! Very punctual, very kind, and transparent from the beginning. He explained everything clearly, gave us a detailed estimate, and kept us updated throughout the whole installation. He finished everything the same day, just as he promised. He also did an amazing job cleaning up afterward. He even used magnets to make sure there were no nails left in our driveway! We are very happy with the work and would 100% recommend Silverio and SGM Home Restoration
