Adding a skylight is structural work, not a fixture swap

We size the opening to the skylight curb, not the other way around, so the finished flashing has the clearance it needs to shed water instead of relying on sealant to make up the difference.
The installation, step by step
Here is what actually happens during a new skylight install, from the outside in:
- Interior layout and rafter check. We confirm the opening location works with the framing below before touching the roof.
- Cutting the roof opening. The decking is cut to the curb dimensions, with temporary support in place if a rafter needs to be doubled or headed off.
- Setting the curb. The skylight curb is set square and level on the decking, with underlayment run up and under it to match the water-management standard of the surrounding roof.
- Step and counter flashing. Flashing is integrated course by course with the surrounding shingles, the same standard we use on every re-roof and roof replacement.
- Interior light well. The opening between the roof and ceiling is framed, insulated, and drywalled so it reads as a designed feature, not a cut-in.
